I have always been a huge fan of motor racing. Throughout my life I have attended races, collected souvenirs and avidly learned as much as I can about the sport. For some reason I had watched very few racing films. In recent times racing movies have had a bit of a resurgence with the release of films like 'Rush', 'Ford v Ferrari' and the Netflix series 'Drive to Survive'. So I decided to go on a bit of a journey and watch all the old movies I could source and discover hidden documentaries. As I was having so much fun I thought it might be worth sharing so that more of you might want to explore the huge array of racing films out there...
In the coming months or maybe years I'll keep adding reviews here, I've got through quite a few already but have a large growing list to watch in the future. So while you might be on Covid-19 lockdown or self isolating why not binge on some motor racing films to top up your racing fix?
Ever wondered how Ronald Regan became president? I think it was solely because of his acting the 1964 film ‘The Killers’, his last film role before becoming the Governor of California in 1967. His presidential credentials are put forward strongly as he demonstrates prowess in robbery, misogyny, wife beating and being a mob boss. Based on this alone he has better credentials that most recent US presidents who can only tick off one or two of these boxes.
‘The Killers’ is a screen adaptation of an 1920’s Ernest Hemmingway short story of the same name. Essentially the plot revolves around two hit men, Charlie Storm and Lee who are sent to murder a racing driver called Johnny North .

Rating:
In 2021 the 1971 motorcycle racing film ‘On Any Sunday’ turned 50 and to celebrate a remastered version of the film was released to the world. Directed by Dana Brown, ‘On Any Sunday’ became a franchise with two more films released in 1981 and 2014. The 2014 film ‘On Any Sunday – The Next Chapter’ was directed by Bruce Brown’s son Dana Brown.
As it happens 1971 was a good year for classic films, Clockwork Orange, Willie Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, Diamonds are Forever just to name a few. Of course, the stand out film of 1971 was ‘Octaman’, where a team of explorers become the target of a humanoid octopus with murderous intentions. Terrifying.

RATING:
What a film, let’s set the tone from the beginning, full frontal boobs within the first two minutes of the film, this is always a good start. Needless to say, this film is loose. While watching it there were times where I wondered whether I was even watching a film or just watching some footage of a drunken party. Hi-Riders was directed by Greydon Clark with a total budget of $125,000 USD, after seeing the boobs I would immediately lower your expectations from that point onward. While the budget was never at the scale of an Academy Award winner, this film does manage to pack in plenty of action loosely tied to a very disorganised story line.

RATING:
To help you get the full movie review experience I have come up with a sophisticated rating system. Instead of rating things with the popular HEARTsymbol, being a kiwi race fan I am using the HARTLEY system. Pretty simple, an excellent film will get a whopping five HARTLEYS whereas a poor one will get a meagre one HARTLEY.
Transcontinental lawlessness!!
Drive up, meet up. kiss and marry a prince
Greener than a mouldy stilton.
Fast cars and big stars.
Smoking is cool..
Get some beast loving...
Come and chew some Brocky!
We're gonna need a montage...(or two)
